Start: The moonlit streets of Silverymoon, eight days after Midsummer
After watching the Daughters of Mystra disappear into the darkened streets of the city, the party travels to the Halls of Inspiration quickly but quietly. Checking out the scene from a dark alley nearby, they find no suspicious activity going on, so the adventurers approach the front door and speak with the night watchpriest.
Celowin knows one of the priests of the temple, so he tells the watchpriest that he urgently needs to speak with her. The timid priest scuttles off, leaving the party standing on the marble steps of the temple. As the adventurers wait for his return, Theodar notices a small cloaked figure watching the party from the rooftop across the street. He detects no evil and warns the rest of the group about their observer, who Celowin recognizes as Garryl, a suspected Harper from the Conclave.
Finally, Celowin’s friend comes to the temple door and speaks with Celowin. Incredulous of the group’s stories of devils in the city attempting to infiltrate the temple, she at first seems reluctant to help, but finally agrees to speak with Lorelord Ormast, the temple’s leader, on behalf of the party’s urgent warnings. As she disappears into the tall, ornate doors again, Celowin’s keen eyes notice movement on the temple’s ornately decorated roof, 50 feet above. Iax starts trying to climb the decorated wall of the temple as Celowin runs across the street and uses a gnarled oak tree to gain access to the roof of a building, where he finds his friend from the Conclave observing the kenku on the temple’s roof. Meanwhile, Theodar is trying to convince the watchpriest that he needs to get to the roof of the temple immediately. As the watchpriest doesn’t seem to be getting the urgency of the situation, Theodar bolts past him into the huge listening hall on the ground floor of the temple and starts running up a set of stairs.
Outside, Fei has magically enhanced Iax’s strength to increase his climbing ability. Iax makes several starts, but falls from a considerable height several times as Fei slowly levitates past him to the roof level. Across the street, Celowin is trading sniper fire with the kenku on the roof before using Garryl’s grappling hook to climb across to the temple’s rooftop. Fei is ambushed by a kenku that snuck up to him, but quickly destroys the bird-headed beast with magic. Theodar finally manages to convince the watchpriest to allow him to look out upon the roof to make sure there are no creatures there.
As the door to the roof opens, Theodar looks up to see a shadowy figure climbing out of one of the windows of the darkened tower on the corner of the cathedral. A globe of shadowy darkness surrounds the figure, but as it spreads its large bat-like wings, the party recognizes Stefar, the erinyes they had fought earlier in the dwarven smithy. Stefar alights upon the steep central dome of the cathedral, clutching a heavy tome to her chest, and summons a cloud of inky darkness that wounds Celowin and Theodar. As Iax continues to try to climb up the side of the temple, Fei finds his magic to be not very effective against the devil. Stefar summons a horde of devils that appear to be mindless humanoids with melting flesh that immediately start to swarm over Celowin, Fei’s summoned badger, and Theodar. Theodar charges through them to tackle Stefar, who begins wresting with him.
Meanwhile, Iax has finally made it to the rooftop and starts cleaving through the summoned devils. The priests of the temple have become aware of the battle on their roof and are starting to appear, destroying some of the devils with magic. As Stefar pulls out an Adrath token and prepares to teleport away with the Grimoire of Shadows, Theodar knocks it out of her hand and pins her where Iax is able to kill her with a mighty swing of his pick.
After the battle, the party meets Lorelord Ormast Keldellyn and Songmaster Beldor Thrivvin, the high priests of the temples of Oghma and Milil, respectively. They listen to the party’s explanation of events and thank them for their help. They allow the adventurers to stay at the temple overnight to guard the book from further attempts at theft. Fei uses this opportunity to read the Grimoire, learning much about a new source of magic called the Shadow Weave that seems to be closely related to the church of Shar.
